Monthly Demonstration Meetings

The Peace River Woodturners conduct monthly lathe and woodturning-related demonstration meetings.  A short business meeting is held to keep Members up-to-date on current Club happenings. During "Show & Tell", individual PRW Members show and discuss turnings they have brought to the meeting. Members will see the up-close details on large monitors throughout the meeting room of the physical lathe processes/techniques used to turn a wide variety  of projects, depending on the subject for that meeting. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and discuss techniques with the demonstrator, and to mingle with the others during short breaks in the meeting's program..

    Definitons
    Vase
is a vessel higher than it is wide.

Hollow Vessel is a form with a top opening smaller than the width, containing substan,al hollow area. Standard hollow vessel or vase – may contain decoration while turning on the lathe (i.e. coves, beads, surface texture).

Embellished hollow vessel or vase – carved, fluted, wood burned, inlay, colored, etc.

Bowl is a form with a top opening is larger than the base, exposing the interior to view (Wider than High).

Standard bowl – may contain decora,on applied while turning on the lathe (i.e. coves, beads, surface texture).

Embellished bowl – carved, fluted, wood burned, inlay, colored, etc.

Plate/platter is a form that is substan, ally wider than high with the surface open to view.

Standard plate/platter – may contain decoration while turning on the lathe (i.e. coves, beads, surface texture

Embellished plate/platter – carved, fluted, wood burned, inlay, colored, etc.

Spindle is a form primarily turned between centers with grain parallel to lathe bed.

All segmented or constructed is a form that is pieced together and turned with one or more woods (e.g. maple/walnut).

Other than wood is a form made of at least 50% other material (alabaster, plastics, metal spinning, soapstone, and combinations of the above).

Miniature is a form where no dimension exceeds 3".

Ornamental/Complex turning is executed on and off a lathe which converts a plain circular section to variants of outline; these range from a simple series of cuts taken at intervals around the work (producing grooves or bumps on the surface) to non-circular movements whereby the whole of the circular shape is removed to give a completely different form. Such shapes are achieved by various methods, the principal ones being; Cutting with a fixed or revolving cuter while the work is rotated on a non-radial path (eccentrically, elliptically, epicyclically, or reciprocating device); Cutting with a revolving cutter while the work remains static, then rotating the piece to produce a series of cuts at intervals around the cylinder or surface; Cutting with a fixed or revolving cutter while the work is rotated on a radial or non-radial path and the cutting apparatus follows a linear, circular, or non-circular motion, these two motions being synchronized by gearing.

Lidded container is a form where the dimension is less than 4" or greater than 4".

Other can be jewelry, toys, Christmas ornaments, utensils, constructed multiple turnings (resulting in spinning wheels, ships, wheel clocks, candelabra, reassembled turnings). Wood or non-woods are acceptable however, 50% of project must be turned.
